Back To The Basics: 20 Must-Have Items Your Wardrobe Needs!

Back To The Basics: 20 Must-Have Items Your Wardrobe Needs!

Call me a nerd, but I love getting compliments on the street when wearing thrifted pieces just so I can share all about my passion for thrifting and the techniques (see my previous blog post here for tips) I use to score fab items!! My sweater and pants worn here are thrifted, and I won’t lie…I laughed at the pants when I first spotted them. By themselves they looked just a liiiiittle bit stripper-ish, but as I thought through what I could pair them with I knew I could pull it off!

It’s all about proportions- If you go risqué on the bottom, keep it somewhat modest on the top and vice versa. You’ll never go wrong in getting dressed with this simple rule of thumb! While I was choosing a bag to pair with this outfit, I thought about something…how many times do we get dressed only to realize {again!!} that we’re missing a basic item in our wardrobe needed to complete the look?! I will admit that it took me years and years to finally check off ALL the essentials! It takes strategic shopping with the ability to not fall victim to trendy distractions {I’m used to be sooo guilty of this!}.

I took the liberty of compiling a short list of wardrobe essentials to get you on track if you struggle in this area so that you never have to ditch a great outfit because you were missing that one thing! So here goes…

  • Plain black leather or leather-like bags (1 w/ silver hardware, 1 w/ gold hardware)
  • Classic black single-sole pumps (I prefer patent leather- think Louboutin’s; Amazon has some top quality affordable options)
  • Dark wash skinny jeans (stay away from light colored threading)
  • Light wash distressed boyfriend jeans
  • Black leather moto jacket
  • Long (or 3/4 sleeve) sleeved bodysuits (I have many of these in a variety of solids, stripes, cotton, chiffon, etc.)
  • Over-the-knee boots (a must-have for fall/winter; start with black)
  • The knit sweater (I like them a bit oversized/slouchy and never stiff)
  • Nude colored shoulder bag
  • Tailored black blazer (I’m a fan of Express and Banana Republic blazers)
  • Simple flats (I always like mine with a little flare like a big bow or pearl embellishments)
  • Little Black Dress or the LBD (get a sleeveless lightweight version and a sweater dress)
  • Faux fur coat (start with black or a neutral shade that compliments your wardrobe palette)
  • Classic white button-up shirt
  • Leather leggings (you can NEVER have too many of these!)
  • Long cardigan/duster coat (these are so chic & I have them in just about every material; I love SheIn and Missguided for this particular item)
  • Simple t-shirts (invest in good quality and start with black & white; run to Zara for these!)
  • Wrap dress (these babies are lifesavers for corporate chicks like me…no outfit styling required…well besides shoes and a bag lol!)
  • Black pencil skirt (grab tan too!)
  • Tapered black pants (If you still have bootcut dress slacks in your wardrobe, ditch them now or have them tailored!)

There’s definitely more to be added to the list, but I’ll save the rest for my upcoming spring/summer list! Now take a screenshot of this list and go get on that intentional shopping 😉
